Who is he 'the teacher's favorite'?

Happy reading!!!

Rathore House

It was a bright April morning when the sun rays were directly entering the room through the gaps between the curtains. Sound of birds chirping, dogs barking and cows mooing could be heard through the windows. The early morning commotion of garbage collectors was spread all over the society. Morning prayers were being recited in the temple nearby. Soon all this bliss vanished when the fan gets turned off and the girl peacefully sleeping was disturbed by the voice of her mother.

“Shreyaaaaaaaaaa”

“Shreya, get up. It’s your first day of the semester. Do you want to be late on the first day itself???”

“Oh god!!! This girl. On one side states she doesn’t like sleeping and then every morning sleeps like a log and that too covering herself with the bedspread by all sides like a mummy.”

The lady came near the bed and started shaking her. After good amount of shuddering, the girl finally woke up. She was rubbing her eyes in half sleep mode when her mother again started.

“Look at the time Shrey. It’s already 7am. Get up quickly. The bus must be coming anytime soon.”

Hearing her mother, the girl panicked and rushed to the washroom gathering her uniform. Soon, she came out well dressed. She picked up the comb and went to the kitchen. “Maa, please tie my hair quickly. I don’t want to be late on the first day and on top of that it’s a new school.”

Shreya got admission in a new school for the upcoming year. She was very anxious to face new people, make new friends and as of now, to reach the school on time. It was not that she lacked confidence. She was just an introvert. In her previous school, she had bonded well with almost every classmate of her batch but sadly she was compelled to join different school from now on. From her childhood, she had changed a lot of schools. Sometimes due to her father’s transfer and the other times the school was not up to the mark and her parents were very serious for her studies. It could be understood by the fact that they changed three schools when she was in 2nd. Beside this, they were very supportive and caring. As a result of all this and her own efforts too, she was a bright student.

“Ahh mom it’s hurting.” She voiced in pain as her mother was braiding her hair tightly. “Maa always does this. Whenever she is angry she puts it on my hair. I’ll try to get up early from tomorrow.” She thought making a pout on her face.

“Yeah it’s done.” Her mother said hitting her head seeing her dramatic cute face. “Fiiiiiine” she sang and came to her room. As she saw the clock, she first formed a pout and then again ran to her mother. “Maa, you always do this. It’s just 6:45 now.” She said.

“So? You should wake up early okay.” Her mother said with a smile well knowing her tricks.

“Shrey beta, bus has arrived. You should leave now.”

Her father called her after sometime.

She went to her room, picked her bag and left bidding bye to her parents. Not to forget her sweet little brother lying on the bed. He was sleeping now as he used to wake up a little late to go to his playschool. He was her heart and soul. She only knew how many prayers she had done to god to give her a baby brother with whom she can play. She came near him, kissed him on the cheeks and whispered “bye brother” making sure his sleep doesn’t get disturbed.

Soon her bus reached the school and everyone went to their respective classes. As she entered the classroom, there were very few students as the bus timing was early. Looking at them with little anxiety as well as excitement, she sat on the last bench.

One by one all the students reached the class along with the class teacher. She was gathering all her confidence and continuously muttering to herself “Don’t worry Shrey. It’s just the first day of school, not a battlefield. Just keep calm and be focused. Everything will be fine……” when she was interrupted by the class teacher. “You are a new student, right? What is your name?”

“Yes ma’am, I am Shreya Rathore.”

“Okay Shreya, sit. Have a good experience here.” Shilpa ma’am, her class teacher, said passing her a supportive smile.

One by one, periods passed and now it was English’s period. Since today was the first day, not much study was done. Mostly introduction or just chapter readings were going on.

“Okay so today we will read this poem. I am not teaching, as in explaining this. You all will read one-one stanza turn by turn. We will start with explanation tomorrow” The English teacher said.

The students started reciting the poem one by one.

Soon, it was her turn and Shreya recited it in a very good manner that the teacher praised her. She was happy with the response.

She sat down and again got engrossed with the book and students kept on reciting stanzas one by one. Soon, a soothing and confident voice entered her ears. She heard a lot of students but wasn’t bothered enough to look up who was speaking but this time, she got detached from the book and looked up to see that a boy whose back was towards her because she was sitting at the last seat was reciting the poem passionately, that too with hand moments. He used to make oceanic waves waving his hand and curled his fingers to show cyclones. He spoke with perfect voice modulations which made the recitation even better.

As he ended with his part, the teacher started praising him.

“Good job, Vedant. You always do the best.”

Hearing the praise for him, Shreya felt jealous and thought “Even my recitation was good. I didn’t get the ‘best’ tag. Why him? And who is he ‘the teacher’s favorite’?” “Shut up Shrey, there are people better than you.” “Yeah but soon I will perform better than him. I can’t be laid back like this.”

Shreya was like this only. She always wanted to be the best. She never thought ill of anyone or wanted to bring someone down or degrade them. But whenever jealousy stroked her, she turned out to perform better than the person who was the cause of her jealousy. This has always helped her to grow and she learnt to use jealousy as a weapon, not a negative trait.

“Okay now focus on the book, not the boy. I know I will beat him anyways. He doesn’t matter.” She again thought and got back to the book.

Soon it was recess and most students went outside the class. But the boy was still stuck in her mind. She wanted to know about him. Soon she noticed that he was talking with two students standing near the door of classroom. The faces of the other two students were visible but again his back was towards her. She got up from her seat to catch a glimpse of his face as she was extremely nervous to go directly to him due to her introvert nature. Even till now, four girls and three boys had talked to her and it was them only who broke the ice. She started walking towards the door. The angle of her view was changing as she was walking. She was just about to look at him when some students came and stood between Vedant and her. She chuckled in anger and again tried to see his face while moving to the other side but she failed again as this time, Vedant himself turned around.

Tired of all this, she huffed and got back to her seat. “Chill bro why are you roaming here and there in the class?” Harshita, her classmate came and asked. Shreya immediately felt embarrassed and said “Ummm nothing I was just looking at the walls. The exhibition boards are decorated so well, no?”

The girl gave her a strange look and went to her seat as bell rang and the recess was over. Shreya could not understand her look first but then looked around and noticed the boards whose decorations she just praised were hanging empty on the walls. “Idiot” She said to herself face palming.

Again, one by one all the periods went by and the school hours ended. While returning to her home in the bus also, Shreya was thinking about Vedant.

She reached home and chit chatted with her mother about her first day experience. All day, she practiced reciting poem.
